Bloodroots: Every Weapon, Ranked | Game Rant

Bloodroots is a relatively recently released game that oozes style and charm (like another recently released indie game) and will likely remind most players of another little game called Hotline Miami. Now, the visual aesthetics of these two games couldn’t be any more different, but both titles are entirely centered around taking out a slew of enemies quickly and stylishly all in a quest for revenge

And, while Hotline Miami, its sequel, and possibly the rumored upcoming third game, all have a ton of weapons to use, they don’t even come close to the sheer number of weapons players can use in Bloodroots. So, let's go through as many of them as we can and rank them from worst to best.

Disclaimer: All the weapons in this game are basically categorized by their overkill finisher animation (basically this game's version of Mortal Kombat-esque Fatalities), as items that share the same animation basically have the same stats and usage. Some weapons stand out even when they're this similar, but because of this facet of the game we've separated them into overall categories, sub-categories, and ranked them from best to worst that way.

A full ranking/tier list of all the weapons un-separated can be found below.

Ah, the One-Handers, these are the weapons Mr. Wolf typically uses one hand to attack with, and are pretty plentiful throughout the 4 different worlds of Bloodroots. They all range in durability from 3 hits to 1 and are shorter range by default. To put it simply, they’re sort of the default class of weapons that usually don’t have any special effects, extra benefits, and are just real all-rounders. As for the sub-categories, the One-Handed have the Head Crushers and the Combo Weapons.

Head Crusher weapons, on average, have about a mid-range and usually have 3 pips of durability rather than one. The Hatchet is in this category and is likely the most recognizable weapon in the game. It just goes to show how memorable a well-designed axe can be. In any case, these weapons are reliable, plentiful, and quick, but not much else.

Weapons In This Category: Plank, Hatchet, Birds Nest, Giant Fruit, Pie, Giant Coconut, Plunger, Hammer, Tankard, Nerf-Gun, Hand Saw, Head of Cabbage, Block of Metal, Wooden Bat, Bow, Table

In terms of general attacks, the Flurry Combo weapons aren’t much different from the Head Crush ones. In general, more of these can be found in a standard level, and while they have less durability on average, the sheer amount of them is what counts.

Weapons In This Category: Drum, Bowling Pin, Bone, Can of Sardines, Metal Coil/Spring, Rubber Duck, Skull Club, Toolbox, Log, Vase, Lantern

For the next main category of weapons, there are the Oversized Two-Handers. These are weapons Mr. Wolf uses to propel himself to new heights, kill multiple enemies at once, and more. The sub-categories for this group are the Leg-Sweepers, Full-Swing Weapons, the Down-The-Hatch Weapons, and the Soul Wrenchers.

There’s only a couple of these types of weapons in Bloodroots, and their main purpose is to completely wreck a group of enemies or serve as a way to get Mr. Wolf to a higher part of the stage. Their constantly found around each level, are immensely useful while they are in use, and have a wide attack in general. The only real downside is the fact that using one to launch Mr. Wolf leaves the weapon behind (usually).

Still, because they can be used for movement, have extra effects like the Ladder’s spin-move, and hit in such a wide arc, these weapons are a lot of fun to use.

Weapons In This Category: Ladder, Giant Pipe, Large Lit Firework, Chain, Hay Bale

The Full Swing weapons are the sub-category for players who want two-handed weapons that aren't super slow to swing. All of the weapons in this group have the same overkill finisher where Mr. Wolf absolutely decimates an enemy, hitting them like a baseball into the horizon like Team Rocket when they’re "blasting off again".

Most of these weapons also springboard Mr. Wolf like the Leg-Sweepers, but Mr. Wolf brings the weapon with them this time, which is why they're above the Leg-Sweepers in the ranking.

Weapons In This Category: Metal Rod, Paddle, Fishing Rod, Giant Banana, Rake, Tiki Torch, Snow Shoes, Large Tree-Saw, Hockey Stick

Out of all the finisher animations in Bloodroots, the Down-The-Hatch weapons have the one that's the hardest to watch. In these animations, Mr. Wolf takes these weapons larger than himself and stabs them vertically through the enemy he’s attacking.

Weapons In This Category: Chainsaw, Gigantic Broadsword, Giant Match, Large Shovel

There are only two Soul-Ripper weapons and they’re even more gigantic than all the other huge weapons in this category. They're so insanely good, especially the Giant Sickle, but the difficulty in actually finding them is a real bummer.

Weapons In This Category: Oversized Gold Axe, Giant Sickle

A smaller category of weapons that Mr. Wofl is seen using both one-handed and two-handed, so it’s up in the air which one they’d “technically” count as, which is why we've labeled them In-Between Weapons. They include the Battle-Axe Sized Weapons and the Throwable Blunt Weapons.

All of these weapons tend to have 3 durability, have more range than the one-handers, and have great designs overall. The double-sided Golden Axe is the iconic representation of this sub-category, and they all follow the same relative size & structure.

Weapons In This Category: Golden Axe, Giant Fish, Large Hammer, Pick, Pickaxe

This is a relatively large sub-category of weapons categorized by them all sharing the same overkill finisher where Mr. Wolf chucks the weapon at his enemy, jumps into the air to grab it, then finishes them off an aerial attack from behind. Plentiful, useful, and has a lot of variety, but their durability on average is a bit less than the last sub-category.

Weapons In This Category: Neon Sign Piece, Dead Raccoon, Carrot, Vase, Stove Pot, Fence Plank, Meat on a Bone, Dead Squirrel, Pumpkin, Oversized Empty Can, Mining Helmet, Banjo, Ribcage, Wooden Chair, Propeller Blade, Log, Gears

Guns! Now that’s more like it for a relatively Western-themed setting like this one. Mr. Black Wolf uses a gun to beat Mr. Wolf in the intro, so it only makes sense they would appear throughout the game.

They’re pretty amazing in general, considering the absurd range Mr. Wolf can hit people from. There are technically two categories for these as well, the Standard Firearms and the Fantastical Weapons. The fantastical weapons basically turn Mr. Wolf into a Wizard with a Gun, while the Standard Firearms are just reliable, consistent, and a safe option at all times.

Only two weapons in the game (that we could see) use this overkill finisher, the Flame-Thrower, and the Plasma Cannon. Both of these weapons are better versions of normal guns with better designs and a more stylish finisher, so of course, but the low chance of them appearing slightly puts them below the normal guns.

Weapons In This Category: Plasma Cannon, Flamethrower

The overkill finisher for the regular guns in this game is so weird. Mr. Wolf takes the gun itself, jumps into the air, and stabs it deep into his enemy’s chest from above. Sort of seems like they should have animated a finisher related to actually firing these weapons? In any case, Guns are basically just overpowered in Bloodroots, but they don't show up quite enough throughout a run.

Weapons In This Category: Harpoon Gun, Rifle, Shotgun, Cannon

On average, the blade-type weapons in Bloodroots are the best. They have the most useful extra effects, have the highest average durability, and are the ones least likely to get Mr.Wolf killed while swinging. The iconic example of this category, the Saber, is a weapon players find in 1-1 that attacks at lightning speed and is used to get over large gaps.

Weapons In This Category: Cow Skull, Glowing Sword, Purple Katana, Saber, Black Saber, Shish-Ka-Bob, Arrow, Snowboard, Spear

Then there’s the Assorted & Unique category. These are the weapons in-game that either don’t fit into any of the other categories or have an overkill finisher that is unique to them alone.

Now, unlike all the other categories, most of these weapons are completely different from one another. The sub-categories are…Explosives, the Spinning Finisher-Type Weapons, and the Single-Animation Weapons, but it was still pretty tough to accurately categorize them even that much. That said, they’re some of the most creative and fun to use weapons in the game on average.

Another sub-category with only two weapons that use this animation, the Fireworks Bundle, and the Flammable Liquid Bottle. Both have neat animations but are easily the least useful Associate & Unique-type weapons on here.

Weapons In This Category: Flammable Bottle, Bundle of Fireworks

Last up for the Assorted category are the two weapons we could find that use this incredibly odd “spinning slice” finisher. Basically, Mr. Wolf throws the weapon at his opponent, it spins around them from their feet up to their head, before jumping up a bit and “slicing into them” when they come back down.

The only thing is, the two weapons in this category are a beach ball and a full cauldron of soup, so how is either of them “cutting” anything at all? In any case, a mostly forgettable sub-group of weapons with an overkill finisher that makes almost no sense at all.

Weapons In This Category: Pot of Soup, Inflatable Beach Ball

These are all a lot of fun. Of course, Mr.Wolf's Fists have to take first place in this sub-category, as they’re the only weapon Mr. Wolf never runs out of. But, all of the weapons in this sub-group are a blast to use.

Weapons In This Category: Mr. Wolf's Fists, Dual Swords, Hand-Hook, Trident, Ball & Chain, Corpses

For this top-tier category, the made-up name for their category is the Ridable Weapons as they’re the only weapons in the game Mr. Wolf can either throw or run over people with. Most commonly players will be encountering these Wooden Barrels (hopefully Arthur's not trapped in there) and Carts of Hay throughout a run that allow players to move quicker, plow through spikes, hop over obstacles, and charge into enemies unafraid.

Weapons In This Category: Barrel, Tire, Oversized Bowling Ball, Steam Roller, Big Cart, Giant Shoe

Here it is, the actual rankings of all the items un-separated into groups. People really love tier lists as it turns out, sometimes even for games that are 5+ years old. But, once again, because any two items in the same "category" basically function the same (with some slight differences), this was ranked based on those same slight differences, such as:

  • How often do they appear in a full-game run?
  • What's the durability of them in combination with their range?
  • Do they have any extra effects like a higher jump, spinning attack, etc..?
  • Are they worth picking up compared to other weapons around them in the stages they show up in?
