Elizabeth Olsen Backs Up Scarlett Johansson During Disney Lawsuit

Elizabeth Olsen has voiced support for her fellow Marvel co-star Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) amid her ongoing lawsuit against Disney. For those who don't know, Johansson has filed a lawsuit against Disney due to them releasing the Black Widow movie on both Disney Plus and in theaters simultaneously.

Johansson's contract reportedly stated that Black Widow would be released exclusively in theaters and since her payout was to be based on the film's box office performance, the actress claims making it available on Disney Plus through Premier Access has cost her financially. So far it's been relatively quiet in terms of other Marvel stars speaking out on this topic. Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista responded to the news on Twitter and fellow actor Alec Baldwin also showed support by tweeting, “#TeamScarlett."

Now, Elizabeth Olsen, known for playing Scarlet Witch, has said her piece on the issue. “I think she’s so tough and literally when I read that I was like, ‘Good for you Scarlett," Olsen said during an interview with Vanity Fair. Olsen is known for being vocal and speaking her mind, which has attracted a large fan base. She's an example of greatness in numbers by standing up for your fellow worker or associate. Usually, when things like this happen, other stars remain quiet so they can stay neutral and cover their bases, so it's always morally nice to see someone stick up for someone else despite risking their livelihood. Hopefully, this resolves well for all parties involved.

Johansson is still fighting for her rights. She wants to make sure she gets the right payout and if she didn't stick up for herself, then there's no telling if this contract breaching would get worse down the line for future actors or if anyone would even speak up. She's essentially entering uncharted territory when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). With streaming becoming a viable option for studios, particularly during a pandemic that has forced theaters to close or limit capacity, contracts for actors in big Hollywood projects could change depending on the outcome of the Johansson/Disney case.

Black Widow was the character's last canonical outing and it introduced Yelena Belova to the MCU, who may be taking on the mantle of Black Widow. The movie was one of many properties that introduced Marvel Studios into phase four of its universe.

Olsen can be seen on the recent Disney Plus series WandaVision, which is part of Marvel Studios' Phase Four of the MCU timeline. The series followed Wanda Maximoff and Vision following the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Black Widow is in theaters and streaming on Disney Plus.
