EVO 2022 Will Return To Being An In-Person Tournament

We’re on the final day of EVO 2021’s online tournament. Today brings the culmination of the best fighters from around the world in Street Fighter 5, Tekken 7, Skullgirls, and Guilty Gear Strive (Mortal Kombat 11's tournament wrapped up last night). And along with today’s momentous bouts comes even more momentous news for next year’s tournaments.

EVO 2022 will return to in-person gaming. That’s according to a tweet that went out last night along with the dates (August 5 to August 7) and the location (Las Vegas).

“We have loved the competition through our online events, but nothing beats live, in-person tournaments between players from around the world,” the tournament organizer wrote. “It has been too long since we have experienced the spirit of the FGC in person together.”

EVO provided no further details, but a trailer was released along with the announcement that showcased some Smash Bros. Ultimate footage, possibly signaling a return of Nintendo's popular brawler. Smash Bros was absent from this year's online-only tournament as the game's poor netcode makes it almost impossible for tournament organizers to ensure fair gameplay, although some are concerned that Sony's acquisition of EVO earlier this year had something to do with Smash Bros' exclusion.

We’ll be sure to get more details before the end of the tournament, either from the announcers or via EVO’s social media accounts.
