Horizon: Forbidden West’s PS5 Upgrade Not Included With Standard Edition

Multiple editions of the upcoming action RPG Horizon Forbidden West have been revealed today and are available for pre-order. This gives gamers who enjoyed Horizon Zero Dawn something to ogle at while waiting for the new game to arrive, as Horizon Forbidden West was delayed recently from the winter of 2021 to February 2022. Players excited about the upcoming sequel are also looking forward to Sony's promised free PS5 upgrade for those who get the game on PS4, but now that the game's editions have been revealed, it seems this process will have a catch.

Developer Guerilla Games has already made efforts to prep fans for the next-gen features that Horizon Forbidden West will offer. Alongside the game's delay announcement at Gamescom 2021 came news that Guerilla Games had released a 60 fps patch for Horizon Zero Dawn on PS5. Several PS4 games have received these 60 fps patches over the course of the year, with Sony seemingly prioritizing games that have newly released sequels or sequels in development on PS5. Horizon Forbidden West will launch on both PS4 and PS5, but PS4 players will need to be smart with their purchase to get a free PS5 upgrade.

Along with the Standard Edition of Horizon Forbidden West, today's announcement showcases the Special Edition, Digital Deluxe Edition, Collector's Edition, and Regalla Edition. As is custom with the increased number of editions for newly released games these days, each edition will have extra goodies on top of the actual Horizon Forbidden West game that vary from a SteelBook cover case and mini art book to special statues, in-game add-ons, and maps. But only the Digital Deluxe, Collector's, and Regalla Editions will offer the PS5 upgrade.

The Standard and Special Editions of Horizon Forbidden West will not include the dual entitlement offer. This means that players who know they will be able to take advantage of the free PS5 upgrade must purchase the $80 Digital Deluxe Edition at minimum, with options for the $200 Horizon Forbidden West Collector's Edition or the $260 Regalla Edition if they want to splurge. This will likely come as a disappointment to some who took Sony's initial statements about Horizon Forbidden West's PS5 upgrade to mean it would be available for all editions.

Sony's free PS5 upgrade offers have been confusing for many gamers since the industry's impetus has slowly pushed toward the ninth generation of consoles. Games like Final Fantasy Remake Intergrade have also limited the free PS5 upgrade to certain editions, while PS Plus gamers who were ready for GreedFall's free nex-gen upgrade had to end up purchasing the game if they'd previously gotten it for free as part of the service. With more upcoming games dual-releasing for PS4 and PS5, next-gen upgrades may continue to confuse gamers.

Horizon Forbidden West releases for PS4 and PS5 on February 18, 2022.
