Gunn, who was notably reinstated to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after he was fired for past Tweets, compared working on DC’s The Suicide Squad and the Guardians films. The filmmaker told ComicBook that the Guardians movies are different because they force him to use different parts of his brain.“I mean, Guardians movies are more geometric,” said the filmmaker, while adding, “This Guardians, in particular, is just gigantic, so I'm just finishing the story that I feel like I need to finish.” Gunn teased that the film will tell Rocket’s story fully and features a heavier plot than its predecessors.

Gunn has made it clear that the threequel will be his final film in the series. Marvel Studios' tenth film is looking to build off of the success of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which grossed $863 worldwide and earned positive reviews from critics. The Guardians cast will also appear in Thor: Love and Thunder and Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. The Disney Plus special will debut on the streaming platform in late 2022 and is expected to lead directly into Vol. 3.

Meanwhile, Gunn's The Suicide Squad will be released simultaneously in theatres and on HBO Max this August. The standalone sequel to David Ayer’s Suicide Squad will see a group of convicts from Belle Reve Hospital come into conflict with a telepathic alien starfish named Starro while attempting to destroy a Nazi-era prison and laboratory. The ensemble cast includes Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, and Sylvester Stallone as King Shark. Gunn noted that The Suicide Squad will feature a narrative separate from the first film’s story arc.

Gunn recently wrapped filming the eight-episode The Suicide Squad spin-off series Peacemaker. The upcoming HBO Max show will focus on John Cena’s Christopher Smith/Peacemaker. The ensemble cast includes Danielle Brooks (Orange Is the New Black), Robert Patrick (Terminator 2), and Chris Conrad (Patriot).

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 5, 2023.
