Modders Porting Team Fortress 2 To Source 2 Engine

Last month, Source 2 Engine became available for semi-public use thanks to Facepunch Games. They're making a Garry's Mod spiritual successor called s&box, which started out in Unreal Engine but later swapped to use Source 2.

Because s&box is basically the same as Garry's Mod, this means you can make pretty much whatever you want. And what a group of dedicated Team Fortress 2 fans wanted was Team Fortress 2, but using the Source 2 engine. So, with access to an early development build of s&box, these modders have announced their plans to port Team Fortress 2 into Source 2 using s&box.

The development team is calling this project Team Fortress: Source 2, and as you can imagine, it's a significant undertaking. Although tools exist to help port assets from Source 1 over to Source 2, the dev team has already run into issues as the tools aren't really made to interact with s&box. As a result, "a lot of assets need to be fixed manually."

On the downside, this means a lot of Team Fortress 2's assets like particles and skyboxes needed to be ported by hand. But on the plus side, s&box's modular nature makes it far easier to make Team Fortress: Source 2 moddable. So far, the team has implemented the Soldier, Scout, Pyro, Demoman, and Sniper from the original game, but there's nothing stopping someone else from adding their custom class to TF:S2 sometime down the line.

There are 23 people currently working on Team Fortress: Source 2, but the mod team is actively searching for new members to help out. The more people giving their time to work on this project, the faster it'll come to fruition.

The funny part is, rumors have persisted for a while that Valve is already working on porting old but still popular Source games over to Source 2, with CS:GO getting the lion's share of attention. If s&box and TF:S2 really take off, we might see the community finish porting CS:GO to Source 2 before Valve does.
