Nearly a year after launch, and the PS5 in some areas looks like a totally different console. The most recent PS5 update dropped this past Septemeber, bringing many quality of life improvements to the console like being able to expand the console’s SSD storage with M.2 drives, and further customization of the PS5’s Control Center. Another massive change was how Trophies are displayed in the Trophy Menu; previously, trophies were sorted horizontally, showing at most four or five trophies at a time, but the last update fixed the menu to display them vertically (like the PS3 and PS4 did before), making for a much more efficient layout.
There is no such thing as a perfect game console, and the PS5 is no exception. However, it can always be improved, as Sony has released a new PS5 firmware update that is available for download now.

The latest PS5 firmware update is available now, though its improvements are rather quaint. PlayStation has yet to formally announce this update’s arrival, but information for it can be found on the PlayStation website’s PS5 System Software page. This new update is “Version: 21.02-04.02.00,” and simply “improves system performance.” Sony officially announced the September PS5 updates well in advance of their drop, which ended up being a substantial update for the console, it makes sense why this smaller update would not garner the same amount of attention.
Not every update must bring a host of new features though, because it is equally important that the console’s general performance is maintained. If the console is to receive later updates that bring more impressive features, the PS5 must be adequately prepared for their arrival. For example, fans are anticipating the PS5’s VR capabilities, while not much information has been given since earlier this year, every update is likely in preparation of it and whatever Sony has up its sleeves. System performance updates are definitely not the most exciting one but they are nonetheless integral to the PS5’s present and future capabilities.
With this update and swath of game reveals at last month’s PlayStation Showcase event, PS5 owners have a lot to look forward to. Insomniac is showing no signs of fatigue with the reveals of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine, making many wonder just how the team continues to put out such impressive projects. Fans also got an extended preview of the highly anticipated God of War: Ragnarok, coming to both PS4 and PS5 consoles. If given the opportunity though, that is going to be a game best played on the PS5.
