Rebel Galaxy Is The Next Free Game On Epic Games Store

You've got six more days to download A Plague Tale: Innocence and Minit over on the Epic Games Store and keep them both forever. Minit was actually a last-minute addition after Speed Brawl suffered a technical glitch and had to pull out of Epic's free offering, but Speed Brawl's loss is your gain.

And today Epic has announced Rebel Galaxy as next week's free game offering. The space combat RPG was indie developer Double Damage Games' first offering and was released on Steam back in 2015. Unlike most space combat games, Rebel Galaxy reduces the wide-open expanse of space to just two dimensions, where capital ships fire devastating broadsides from within the plane of each solar system.

This simplification of space combat makes Rebel Galaxy feel more like a classic naval action game rather than a space sim. Combined with the country and blues-rock soundtrack over a Western motif, Rebel Galaxy was a truly unique offering.

A prequel called Rebel Galaxy: Outlaw stepped into the full-3D space combat genre with an exclusive release on the Epic Games Store in 2019. It retained the space Western themes but featured fighter-sized spacecraft rather than capital ships. Outlaw was a fine addition to games like Everspace 2 and Freelancer, but it always felt like it lost something adding that third dimension.

You can download Rebel Galaxy and keep it forever on the Epic Games Store from August 12 to August 19. And the free games just keep coming with Far Cry 5 going free-to-play this weekend on both Epic Games and Ubisoft Connect. If you like it, you can keep playing with an 85% discount on both stores.
