The Eater of Worlds is a pre-Hardmode boss found only in Corruption worlds. As of Terraria 1.4, the final Journey's End update, there have been some changes to the Eater of Worlds, particularly in Expert and Master mode.

In a classic world on ordinary difficulty, the Eater of Worlds boss fight isn't too tricky, as long as you are prepared with the right level of gear and have a rough idea of how to approach the fight. This guide covers the absolute basics as well as some more advanced tips for master and expert mode.
How To Summon The Eater Of Worlds
The Eater of Worlds (often abbreviated to EoW) is summoned in one of two ways: either by smashing three Shadow Orbs at the base of the Corruption biome or by crafting and using the Worm Food boss summoning item.
- Shadow Orbs are found at the base of the Corruption biome, usually in a long tunnel that extends horizontally underneath the biome. You can find it by jumping down one of the large worm-like holes.
- You cannot break the Corruption blocks with your ordinary pickaxe, but you can use explosives to destroy the blocks.
How To Craft Worm Food
Worm Food is crafted with:
- 30 Vile Powder – Crafted from Vile Mushrooms or purchased from the Dryad NPC (only during the Blood Moon.)
- 15 Rotten Chunks – Rotten Chunks are the material dropped by the Eater of Souls, Corruptors, and Devourers in the Corruption biome.
You must use the Worm Food when inside the Corruption biome, otherwise the Eater of Worlds will not spawn.
As of Terraria 1.4, the Eater of Worlds must be defeated before any Meteorites spawn on your world. This was changed from destroying just Shadow Orbs to make the early game a bit more balanced. If you're struggling with getting meteorites to spawn, our guide has you covered.

Preparing For The Eater of Worlds Fight
The Eater of Worlds is likely the second boss you'll fight in Terraria, pretty much immediately after defeating the Eye of Cthulhu. You may kill the King Slime in-between (just by chance), but it's not necessary.
Here are some general tips to get you prepared for the fight in normal mode:
- The Eater of Worlds is actually made of a dozen or so different segments. The Heads do extra damage, but they are also more vulnerable.
- Piercing weapons are your best friend. Take the Vilethorn, for example, if you want to make short work of the different segments.
- Other weapons that work well include Grenades and Spiky Balls.
Tips For Expert and Master Mode Eater of Worlds
Extra preparation is crucial for these harder difficulties. Here are some tips and info about the Eater of Worlds on Expert difficulty.
- The Eater of Worlds gets a significant health buff in both Expert and Master mode.
- The Expert-mode Eater of Worlds takes significantly reduced damage from explosives, like grenades. A magic weapon, like the Vilethorn, is recommended. Here is our list of the best pre-Hardmode weapons to get you prepared.
- It will also fire Vile Spit, which has a chance to inflict the Weak debuff if it hits you.
- Health and damage are further increased for Master Mode.
Preparing an arena is much more important in Expert and Master mode. Although destroying large areas of the underground Corruption might seem tiresome, getting caught in a tunnel with the EoW is pretty much instant death. Use Sticky Bombs to clear out a large area and then place platforms down, with the usual campfires.
You can use Beds to teleport to a safer area if you're destroying orbs. Just use the Magic Mirror or a Recall potion to send you back to a safer spot, ideally inside your boss arena.
What Does The Eater of Worlds Drop?
Here is a list of items that the Eater of Worlds drops.
- Shadow Scale and Demonite Ore, used to craft a variety of Corruption items, like Shadow armor and the Corruption bow. One kill of the Eater of Worlds is usually enough to get the Shadow Scale you need to craft the most useful items.
- The Eater's Bone, a pet-summoning item.
- Eater of Worlds Mask and Trophy, two cosmetic items, one vanity and one to be placed in your trophy room.
- As of 1.4, the drops for Expert mode also include the Writhing Remains, a pet-summoning item, and the Eater of Worlds Relic, basically an advanced trophy.
Farming the Eater of Worlds is a great way of earning money before you enter Hardmode, preparing you to buy wings and other useful items. You can also spawn the Eater of Worlds in different biomes which means you can farm for drops, like the Amarok Yoyo in a Corrupted snow biome.
