Why Among Us Fans May Want to Check Out The New Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Mode

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Season 5 drops on Friday, August 13, and it is bringing a brand-new game mode along with it. While many longtime players are excited to play some Demolition once again, with a classic map like Slums also available to fight through, those looking for something that is entirely fresh have Double Agent to look forward to. However, while the game mode’s premise is new for the Call of Duty series, it has been seen elsewhere.

Any fans of Among Us should be keeping an eye on the new Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War mode. As indicated by its trailer and Treyarch’s blog posts breaking Double Agent down further, the mode will mainly see players trying to find out which of their opponents is and is not a killer. With voice chat strongly suggested, and a focus on players deceiving one another, this new party mode could appeal to the exact same fan base that helped make Among Us such a monumental success.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s Double Agent mode spits players into three different roles. At the start of each match, the ten-player lobby will be given time to loot the map for weapons as they wait to find out their given objective. The titular Double Agents need to stealthily plant bombs around the map or kill everyone else in the lobby without being caught. The Investigator can search the map for clues, warning players about potential killers lurking in the shadows. Finally, there are Operatives, who need to kill the Double Agent before they are all wiped out.

An interesting touch sees each class getting a special lineup of abilities, with the items being a mix of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s scorestreaks and field upgrades. For example, the Double Agent will have Gas Mines to ambush their prey, a Counter Spy Plane to jam enemy radars, a Combat Bow, and Attack Helicopters. They will also not take any damage from the bomb’s radiation, something that could be a double-edged sword. After all, if players see someone shrugging off the gas, they would instantly be able to know it’s an imposter.

Investigators, on the other hand, get some different items to mess around with in this Season 5 multiplayer mode. Trophy Systems, Stimshots, and Hand Cannons can all be equipped, with the tools letting the Investigator deal a fair bit of damage while also keeping themselves alive. Intriguingly, Investigators can also mark the players that they find suspicious, allowing their teammates to track them down and kill them before they can get any closer to winning the match.

Overall, the mode sounds like a lot of casual fun, and it should fit perfectly with other party games like Prop Hunt and Gun Game. While it will rely on players following the rules, those that like to stream could have a lot of fun filling out their lobbies with players that they know. This could spark a very similar environment to what is seen in Among Us, with players going up against their close friends and trying to point out whenever they are acting different.

Based on the trailer for the mode, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War fans will have to openly communicate about who they think is a Double Agent – something that should sound incredibly familiar to Among Us fans. With Treyarch pushing players to use voice chat even though the game has a text chat feature, it seems like a lot of the entertainment will come from pointing out anyone that is acting a bit “sus.” With the mode taking players out of Among Us’ space stations, and providing a first-person perspective, the different aesthetic could be a nice change of pace.

For those looking for the same kind of experience but are a bit burnt out by Among Us specifically, Double Agent’s style could be a perfect change of pace. Call of Duty’s signature FPS mechanics could fit well within this kind of mode, and unique features like the Investigator role and an alternate objective for the killer could make Double Agent stand out. While there is surely a lot more support on the way for Among Us itself, this copycat mode could be a nice fit for players that prefer AAA games like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. With PlayStation and Xbox players also waiting for Among Us to debut on the platforms, Double Agent could be a nice way to kill the time.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
