Marvel’s Midnight Suns Won’t Let You Romance Heroes

Firaxis has confirmed that you won't be able to romance anyone in Marvel's Midnight Suns.

Marvel's Midnight Suns was revealed last night at Gamescom's Opening Night Live showcase, with a cinematic trailer that showed several Marvel heroes alongside a custom-created character. Several journalists were able to see a preview of the game beforehand, with some comparing the game's social systems to a dating sim, with some very similar sensibilities..

Despite Firaxis pushing the social elements of the game, as it turns out, you players won't be able to romance characters after all and will instead focus on "deep, deep friendships".

Firaxis creative director Jake Solomon commented on this during a recent interview with IGN, saying, "The idea is that by the time you maximize your friendship with these characters, you are as close to them as anybody else in the Marvel universe. But yeah, not romantic. Trust me, if I could romance Blade, I would But yes, it's more a case of these are very well-defined characters. So instead it's deep, deep friendship."

Other interviews referred to the closeness of the characters as "very, very, very good friends", which is really emphasising the point. There aren't romances, in case you can't tell.

It probably shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that players won't be able to romance the Marvel characters, as it's unlikely that Marvel or Disney want to mess with the established canon and see your custom-created characters smooching Wolverine when we all know Jean Grey exists in the universe. A similar situation happened when The Sims 4 crossed over with Star Wars, as players weren't able to romance Kylo Ren or Rey as they were established characters, despite that being a pretty normal thing to do in The Sims.

Some thought that might not be the case, considering how unique Midnight Suns looks compared to other Marvel canon, but it's still not too surprising to see Marvel keep a close grip on its characters. You can still expect to get close to them, but it'll just be in a friendly way.
