Olympic Opening Ceremony Features Music From Video Games

The Tokyo Olympics 2020 opening ceremony featured orchestrated music from Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, and Nier, just to name a few.

Gamers who sat at home watching the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony took to Twitter to voice their surprise at hearing orchestrated music from some of the biggest Japanese games.

The gaming music pieces accompanied the Japanese athletes as they walked onto the stage to start off the ceremony. The first track playing was "Introduction: Lotto Quest" from Dragon Quest, before moving on to Final Fantasy's iconic victory fanfare. Other big Japanese RPGs like Kingdom Hearts, Chrono Trigger, and even Nier also had orchestrated renditions to accompany the opening ceremony.

Although there were a lot of JRPGs represented through the orchestrated music, that wasn't all that appeared. Sonic the Hedgehog's "Star Light Zone" from the original game appeared, whilst Sega's Ace Combat also had the spotlight during the ceremony. Even PES got involved in the Olympics action, with the main walk-on theme from eFootball being a part of the show. A full tracklist can be found here.

Considering how huge gaming is over in Japan, it's likely no surprise that all of these famous Japanese-developed titles all appeared during the Olympics. However, seeing such iconic games appear in a medium outside of what they're known for has been viewed incredibly positively by gamers across social media.

Although the presence of games is nice to see, it's worth noting that the Olympics Opening Ceremony has had its fair share of controversies over the past few days, with several of its composers being fired. Yesterday, Kentaro Kobayashi was from the role of show director after footage surfaced of him making jokes about the Holocaust in the 1990s.

Japan's Olympic chief Seiko Hashimoto said the footage "ridiculed painful facts of history". Several other key organisers for the event have been fired as well, such as one unnamed composer who was asked to quit after it was discovered that he bullied classmates with disabilities at school.
