Square Enix Says Nier Reincarnation Was Developed With "The Same Quality As Console Games"

Nier Reincarnation is out globally today after already having been released for 6 months in Japan. A mobile title, Reincarnation features many of the trappings of other mobile games like being free to download but full of gacha-style mechanics.

But just because it's a mobile title doesn't mean it's bad, said game director Daichi Matsukawa in an interview with IGN. “In order to get Western players to accept [mobile games], I think it is important that we develop games of the same quality as console games, while at the same time utilizing the strength of mobile games by implementing frequent updates," Matsukawa said.

"This is not just a Nier title that can be casually played, but one that will keep evolving day by day.”

Reincarnation is launching with a Nier Automata crossover event that will bring 2B, 9S, and A2 into the mobile title. Reincarnation held the same event when it launched in Japan last winter, which also brought with it a few extra items and costumes. The Japanese version of the game also held a crossover event with Nier Replicant, featuring Nier, Kaine, and Emil.

We can probably expect more crossovers with other Square Enix titles as part of those “frequent updates” Matsukawa mentioned.

Although Square was kind enough to give us a global release for Reincarnation, it doesn't sound like they have high hopes for sales outside of Asia. “To be honest, we don’t expect too much from the mobile game market in the West," producer Yosuke Saito told IGN. "We just hope that for those who are interested in this game, it will function as a great opportunity to get familiar with Nier.”

Nier Reincarnation launches today on iOS and Android. Download it now from their respective stores.
