Team Fortress 2 Remake Took Half-Life: Alyx’s Liquid Shader For Demoman’s Whisky

Team Fortress 2 is being remade in Source 2, but not by Valve. A group of enterprising TF2 fans has taken it upon themselves to remake the game using s&box, the spiritual successor to Garry’s Mod. Because s&box is built using Source 2, remaking all of TF2 in s&box basically amounts to a Source 2 engine port.

It’s a little bit more complicated than that, as the developers describe in their announcement blog post, but that’s the gist of things. It’s being treated the same as a real game project and we’re even getting regular updates from the Team Fortress: Source 2 team over on Twitter.

The latest comes courtesy of Daniel Basiuc-Brînzei sharing a GIF of a work-in-progress for TF:S2's Demoman. Specifically, Demoman's whisky.

"Decided to copy-paste Alyx's liquid shader properties to the demo's bottle model," Daniel wrote. "It doesn't look right at all, but it's still something interesting to consider."

You can see in the gif that the liquid doesn't move quite right–it seems to jiggle a little bit more frantically than actual whisky should. Still, it's got the right color and opacity for alcohol, and that's something that can easily be built on.

Team Fortress: Source 2 is still in the very earliest stages of development, so don’t expect to be playing this game anytime soon. But if you’re desperate for retro shooter action, Quake just got a remaster that’s worth checking out.
