The World Before, The Fourth Installment In The Cult-Classic Syberia Series, Releases This December

Publisher Microids has announced that Syberia: The World Before will be hitting PC on December 10, 2021. Coming to Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store, this fourth installment in the cult-classic adventure series has been in the works for several years now. The final game directed original series creator Benoît Sokal before his death earlier this year, the story is split across two different timelines where players will explore both 1937 and 2004 Siberia to uncover a new mystery.

A playable prologue episode has been available on Steam and GOG since last year and it seems development had gone along smoothly since then. We may have roughly half a year before The World Before releases, but it's nice to get confirmation that the game won't be suffering cancellation after all this time. That would be a shame as Sokal is no longer here to soak in whatever feedback this will receive.

The last we heard from the Syberia series was with Syberia 3 back in 2017. Released to almost universal derision, many feared the negative feedback would spell the end for this once proud series. That changed in 2019 when Microids aired intentions to continue the franchise with The World Before.

As for the original games, 2002's Syberia was regarded as one of the best games of that year. Even its follow-up, Syberia 2, was lauded for continuing the quaint charm of the original while expanding its mechanical depth. It may not be a household name by any means, but this well-respected series deserves attention for its unique setting and emotional storytelling.
